The Hollow Man by Paul Hollis

The Wordicle’s Author’s Leak presents

Paul Hollis

And his riveting spy novel in, “The Hollow Man.”

From the author, Paul Hollis:

In over his head, a U.S. government analyst is no hero; not clever or capable, talented or tested. This hollow man is just trying to survive in an uncertain world where terrorism is changing the way we live.

The reader won’t find James Bond or Jason Bourne in these pages, but she will find a memorable read. In conjunction with flawed yet closely identifiable characters, vivid imagery, and nonstop action, the books in the series were made to be experienced with the senses.

The inspiration for The Hollow Man comes from a series of true incidents that occurred during the early 1970’s. This book traces some of the author’s lesser known exploits traveling in Europe as a young man. To make a long story short, Paul Hollis met a guy in early 1973 who thought Paul was wasting his time digging latrines in East Africa for the Peace Corp. He had a better offer.

“At the time,” Paul Hollis says, “a new type of terrorism was on the rise in Europe and I was assigned to learn as much as I could about it. I shadowed people and investigated potential plots that were intended to bring terror to American shores or otherwise go against our worldwide interests.

As I collected the information, I was supposed to turn it over to my handler for final resolution by professionals who operated outside of US borders. That’s how it was supposed to work. But, when you’re young, wild, and untrained, things don’t always go according to plan. Here’s the environment I worked in:

“Most early acts of terror prior to 1970 were specific, personal and damage was focused on a distinct, definable enemy. But by the early 1970’s, terrorism was beginning to change its strategy to the familiar, senseless chaos we now recognize. A new breed of terrorist brought their fight to the common man.

The death of political figures had become commonplace and no longer seemed to bother us as much as these new, random attacks against our children. Targets of innocence became preferable to these people because it resulted in the kind of horror that struck the hearts of all human beings. The fear inside us grew larger with each incident.”
